Out Of Touch

And out of mind

For the next four days, I will be basically unreachable by 21st century standards. I’ll be taking a nose dive back to the Spanish civil war – more specifically, to August 1936.

We’re (my class and I) are going to be doing something we call “Living History”, which is exactly what the name says; we’ll be living history. We have been researching the Spanish civil war and creating our own characters (I’m a doctor, 25 years old, married for 2 years to a 40 year old herbologist). Monday through Thursday we’ll be spending on a farm from 9-17, living in the Spanish civil war.

It’s an improvisation exercise that is designed to show us exactly how much work goes into creating an entire new human being with its own thoughts and opinions of the world. East 15 is the only acting school that does this, so we are quite privileged and very excited.

In context to this, I will keeping my mobile phone switched off for the next four days. Our teacher said we were free to do as we wished after we get back from the farm for the day, but encouraged us to stay away from too many modern devises for our own sake.

So, don't freak out if my mobile phone is continuously out of reach.

Ham

-an angry rant.

So I come home, rearrange something on my fridge shelf, and what do you think I find at the back? An open package of ham. Now, this would be all well and good, if I didn’t already have another pack opened, and it wasn’t I who opened this newly discovered one. I had bought the two packs on sale, two for two pound (one being 1.75£, so wohoo I got an extra for just another 25p!). This would last me nicely to the end of term, I thought.

Now I have come to fully understand my mother’s frustrations when I or my brother opened a second pack of ham by accident at home. It’s extremely frustrating. A closed pack can last weeks, an open one? One week? At least at home, with basically the whole family eating ham at a regular basis, we’d have hopes of getting through two packs before either of them went bad. But me on my own? With one full and one half full? That isn’t gonna work.

To top it all off, I’m not entirely sure what annoys me most: the fact the brilliant bargain of 2 for 2£ was wasted, or the fact that this package of ham was opened without my knowing. The culprit didn’t ask me before hand, didn’t tell me afterwards, opened a new and sealed pack, and even had the gall of hiding it at the back of my shelf! Yeah, we’re students living together, basically family, but come on. No one’s that rude – though obviously, someone actually is. Geez.

Okay, angry rant over. (we’ve also had many cases of “stolen” food before this, just like this incident. I have pretty good idea of who it was, I won’t drop names, but the rest of us a pretty exasperated by now).

I know it’s been long since I last posted. I’ve been – and still am – so busy you won’t believe.
